T rying to lower our TV bill, so I made a call to Dish yesterday. After spending time with Mario at customer loyalty, we came away with a one-year deal at a reduced rate, with a $13/mo sports package free for a year. Savings of about $40/mo . That’s the good news.

Despite having the sports package, one of the channels, Fox Sports 2, wasn’t working. So I called and they did some mummery on their end and told me to unplug/replug the box. I did, and the HD failed. And I still don’t have the channel. Everything that I had recorded is now gone.

In a way, it’s not that horrible a thing. Some of the movies we recorded had been on there for years and we’d never watched them. Others I had already transferred to an external drive. And the receiver was about 15 years old, so it was probably due. To their credit, Dish is expediting a new receiver at no charge, even though we don’t have the protection plan. And, having all of those movies was one of the things that was making me drag my feet on ditching cable. Now, when our year is up, we’ll take a look at the lie of the land and make a final decision on cutting the cord.

Maybe this was serendipity.

This reminds me that I need to have DirecTV out to my casa in the relatively near future to get new boxes. Mine aren’t even connected to the internet.

I’m living in the Middle Ages over here.

My Dish box isn’t connected either. Unless the new one has wifi, I don’t want to run a network cable across my living room. Haven’t really missed it, though.

The new ones are WiFi.

I briefly considered getting DirecTV once, then I found out that my building was the territory of some exclusive distributor, which meant that I didn’t qualify for the normal promotional discounts, and I would have to pay an additional $10/month to the distributor... I was tempted to get Dish installed just to spite the apartment company with a (somewhat) ugly dish installed on the clean exterior of their brand new building, but ultimately decided that would be petty and self-defeating. And now I haven’t had TV service for a decade, except when TV+Internet was somehow cheaper than Internet alone (I had a cable box sitting in my closet in Houston doing nothing for three years).

If I can’t find something to watch on Netflix or Amazon Prime or YouTube, then it’s time to squander my hour doing something else.

The boys don’t watch TV at all any more. It’s all YouTube. I mostly watch sports. After this year, we will seriously look into other options.

We tried xfinity for a minute, but the package was a terrible hodgepodge of analog crap pictures of the wrong aspect ratio to fit the television screen and to be able to plug in the HDMI cable c ost extra and with a few choice words, I ended my relationship with them. We’re swinging the other way now, with everybody wanting a subscription.   For example, Finneas and Pherb Disney pulled from Netflix because Disney want their own subscription. Pass.
